When the moon is directly opposite the sun in the sky, we see the entire illuminated portion of the moon (a full circle) and have the full moon phase. The orbit then continues through thewaning (shrinking) phases: waning gibbous, third quarter, and waningcrescent. The cycle then repeats itself.
