The more positive the value of Eϴ , the greater is the tendency
of the species to get reduced. Using the standard electrode
potential of redox couples given below find out which of the
following is the strongest oxidising agent.
Eϴ values : Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ = + 0.77V ; I₂(s)/I⁻ = + 0.54;
Cu²⁺/Cu = + 0.34; Ag⁺/Ag = 0.80 V
(a) Fe³⁺ (b) I₂(s)
(c) Cu²⁺ (d) Ag⁺

Answer: option (c)Cu+2 is correct answer.

Explanation:I think so you should write Cu in place of Cu+2 for oxiding agent.

The strongest oxidising agent :

Given :

•Eϴ values : Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ = + 0.77V ; I₂(s)/I⁻ = + 0.54;

Cu²⁺/Cu = + 0.34; Ag⁺/Ag = 0.80 V

• Also given, The more positive the value of Eϴ , the greater is the tendency of the species to get reduced.

• That means more positive electrode potential, stronger the oxidizing agent.

• Here we have Ag⁺/Ag to have most positive electrode potential i.e +0.80 V

• Hence, the strongest oxidizing agent is Ag⁺
