There are 39 minutes in each class period.

Explanation:

Let us understand the problem first:

1st period class [5 minutes] 2nd period class [5 minutes] 3rd period class [5 minutes] 4th period class

So there are (3 × 5) minutes = 15 minutes break in total.

Now, 11:51 a. m. - 9 a. m. = 2 hours 51 minutes

∴ total time for 4 class periods

= 2 hours 51 minutes - 15 minutes

= 2 hours 36 minutes

= (2 × 60) + 36 minutes

= 120 + 36 minutes

= 156 minutes

the time for each class period

= (156 ÷ 4) minutes

= 39 minutes
