Italian honey bee (Apis mellifera) is highest money producer apiary bee. It is doing well in India especially in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. This bee is less ferocious and acclimatized to Indian fauna. It is performing well in different other parts of country.

The native honey bee species (Apis cerana indica) is at second place. This bee comparatively yields less honey but capable of withstanding diseases better. This bee also occurrs in wild in India.

Stingless bee (Apis mellipona) are raised for honey though they produce very small amount. Their honey is costliest as it has medicinal property.

Non apiary honey is collected in large amount from wild rock bees (Apis dorsata). This bee is ferocious hence not domesticated.
