The most common type of vacuole present in a plant cell is a Sap Vacuole.
- Vacuoles are non-cytoplasmic areas present inside the cytoplasm which are separated from the latter by a specific membrane. They are of four types - Sap vacuole, Contractile vacuole, Food vacuole and Air vacuole
- The vacuoles store water, excretory products, sap etc. Sap vacuoles are present in both plant and animal cells. The contains water, mineral salts, sugars (sucrose), amino acids, esters, proteins and waste products.
- The Sap Vacuole is separated from the cell cytoplasm by a semipermeable membrane called tonoplast. In mature plant cells, many sap vacuoles combine to form one large central vacuole which occupies 90% of cell space. The sap in the vacuole maintains osmotic pressure in the cell and gives turgidity to the cell.
