The simple pendulum describes an Oscillatory motion.
An Oscillatory motion is a form of motion in which, it repeats itself over & over again many times during a motion about its mean position, such that it remains confined within two well defined limits called extreme position on one side of the mean position that is a fixed point, in a exact amount of unit time.
An Oscillatory motion is a periodic & bounded motion of a body about its mean position i.e. center position.
It is said that all Oscillatory motion are periodic motions but all periodic motions are not Oscillatory motions.
Examples :
- a mass attached to the top of a flexible rod forms an inverted pendulum
- the time of tuning fork vibrator, its base is fixed, an another example of inverted pendulum
