Jawaharlal Nehru wanted India to be self-reliant country to overcome the handicap of its colonial past.
That is why he launched the multi purpose projects that not only controls flood but also useful in irragation,power generation,fish breeding etc.These projects were considered to being development in villages and make a mordern India.
The dams were an important symbol of these projects and consequently of the modernisation of the India.That is why Nejru called dams as the 'Temples of Mordern India'.
