The brain looks for relaxation when we are overwhelmed. The vibrations of the calm music provide that relaxing vibrations to the brain. Thus we tend to hear music when we are sad or happy or are feeling any other excessive emotion.

It is indicated that sad music is listened to more commonly in sad mood and negative situation. Many different motivations have been found with regards to listening to sad music such as validating emotions, providing solace, providing rewarding emotional experiences, and aiding reflection and relaxation.

She stated: “If I'm feeling depressed I tend to put on happy music like cheesy pop and things to try and cheer myself up almost. Something with a fast tempo to kind of boost my mood.” These strategies were considered to represent conscious processes adopted by participants to change their mood.
