Answer:
“Pete” was 18 months old when I first saw his profile online. He had been picked up as a stray in a nearby town. The shelter located his owners but when contacted the response was, “yeah, we knew he’d got loose. Just keep him, we don’t want him.” I found and talked to them (through social media) and was told that they’d got him as a puppy but became increasingly aggressive toward their other dog so they “surrendered” him to the shelter.
Before I met him, he’d went on a “trial” adoption. I don’t know how long that lasted or why it didn’t work out (trial means can be returned, no questions asked)
In the year and a half he’d been alive no one had taken the time to teach him anything. He’d been passed around and given up on by everyone.
I made arrangements to meet him and it was love at first sight and I took him home that day. He was timid and obviously scared. That didn’t last long. It was as if a demon took over his body and the struggle began. He chewed up everything within reach, tore out window screens to escape (never going far) barked at everything and nothing at all, counter surfing, the list goes on & on.
By day three I informed him that I was every bit as stubborn as he was. I AM the boss and I will NOT give up on you like everyone else has. As I’m telling him all this and he’s doing that super cute “head tilt” thing, it hit me…..He was so not a “Pete”
I named him Dodge because he was such a “Challenger”
