Nicola and Jacopo are self respecting boys. They take pride in themselves and their family. They had always lived a comfortable and cultured life. But now they have lost everything. They had to live a hard life of poverty. Yet they proved true to themselves and their family. They did nothing that could be called the degrading or mean. They did not talk of their family problems to anyone. They felt pride in dealing with themselves.
