Answer:

The narrator was sent to the village to find Oliver Lutkins. He met with Bill, the Hack driver in the place. Bill himself was Lutkins. The narrator was not able to find Lutkins as he was misled by Bill. Still, he was very happy to return from the village. He found that the people there lived in peace and together. He was also very happy with the nature and behavior of the hack driver. The narrator was very happy with his experience in the village.

The narrator had hated city life. This ride through the village made him very happy. He was overjoyed to meet the hack driver. Even he planned to settle down in that village. So he was happy though he had not found Lutkins.
