Answer:

British New Guinea, or Papua (now part of Papua New Guinea), was located in the south-east of the island of New Guinea, north of Australia. It was constituted as a protectorate in 1884, annexed in 1888, and placed under Australian control in 1906. German New Guinea (now part of Papua New Guinea), came under German control in 1884. Its capital was in Rabaul, and it was composed of the north-eastern part of New Guinea (known as Kaiser-Wilhelmsland), and several neighbouring islands.

Apart from the landing of troops from the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary force in the German protectorate in September 1914, the effects of the war were hardly felt in New Guinea.
