The highways in India are generally paved with bituminous material. But they are prone to damage and need frequent maintenance. To overcome this problem the National Highways Authority of India has recently signed a memorandum of understanding, MOU with IIT - Kharagpur. It is for a research project to develop technology for constructing long lasting maintenance free highways in India. The duration of the project is three years. The IIT will develop paneled cement concrete pavements for highways.
