We know displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and final point and distance is the total path covered by an object.

When a object is travelling along the sides of a rectangular field from starting point to back then i displacement of the object is zero since the object is back on the starting point but the distance travelled by the object is equal to the perimeter of the rectangle that is 2 (l+ b)where l is the length of rectangle and b is the breadth.

  • Displacement is less than or equal to the distance.
  • Speed is defined in the terms of distance and time while velocity is defined in terms of displacement and time.
  • displacement is a vector quantity wild distance is a scalar quantity.
  • Total distance can be simply calculated by the algebraic sum while the displacement is calculated using vector law of addition.
