The network of railway is affected by economic development, physiographic, geographical and administrative factors.

• The Northern plains with its vast level lands, high population density and rich agricultural resources provide the best conditions for setting up railways. However, the large number of rivers requiring bridges across their wide beds posed some obstacles.

• In the hilly terrains of the Himalayan mountains, the conditions are too unfavourable. The high relief, undulated topography, sparse population and lack of employment opportunities make it difficult.

• It is also difficult to lay railway lines on the Sandy plains of Rajasthan, swamps of Gujarat and forested tracts of Madhya Pradesh.

• The development of the Konkan railway has facilitated the movement of goods and people. But sinking of tracks in some stretches and landslides cause problems.

Hope it helps.
