Since the earliest times, the British East India Company was informally known as the John Company, among many of it's members and employees, including many top British officials.
There are no official records of why the company was called, John Company. Some suggest that John, as a popular name was just used to shorten the name while communicating.
Some say, it was used as a disguise while communicating among enemy Territory.
However, it is possibly named after John Johnstone. The infamous employee of British East India Company, who made a lot of money in India through corrupt practices and then bought large land holdings in his native Scotland
