The second half of the 19th Century ushered in the era of Nationalism in India. Though the revolt of 1857 did not result in victory for the Indian, spirit of challenging the foreign rule continued. The intellectuals were greatly inspired by the political principles and methods of protest in Europe. New political ideas and organisations developed apace, and the birth of a political consciousness began to take shape during this period. Many factors contributed to the growth of Nationalism in the 19th century. The socio religious Reform movements led to an awakening among the masses, whereby a feeling of Oneness developed. This in turn gave birth to National Movement. It was National because it represented the aspirations of the majority of Indians, and people started looking beyond their regional interest.
