First, a five-year plan was started in 1951 and ended in 1956.

Second five-year plan most commonly known as MAHALANOBIS model started in 1956 and ended in 1961.

There was a total of twelve five year Plans and the concept of a five-year plan was ended in 2017.  

Planning Commission use to formulate the five-year plans but when five-year plans ended, the planning commission also got dissolved and it was succeeded by NITI AAYOG
