1. kno3 will not produce brown fumes on heating because The nitrates of lithium, silver and most divalent and trivalent metals on heating decompose to give reddish brown fumes of nitrogen dioxide and oxygen as the gaseous products

4LiNO3 = 2Li2O + 4NO2 + O2

2AgNO3 = 2Ag + 2NO2 + O2

Hg(NO3)2 = Hg + 2NO2 + O2

2Mg(NO3)2 = 2MgO + 4NO2 + O2

2Pb(NO3)2 = 2PbO + 4NO2 + O2

4Al(NO3)3 = 2Al2O3 + 12NO2 + 3O2

But the nitrates of sodium and other heavier alkali metals - potassium, rubedium and caesium - do not liberate NO2 on heating. They give only oxygen as the gaseous product and the respective nitrite is left as the solid residue.

2NaNO3 = 2NaNO2 + O2

2KNO3 = 2KNO2 + O2

Ammonium nitrate, a nonmetallic compound, decomposes to nitrous oxide (N2O, laughing gas) and water on heating.
