The no. of proton and electron are similar but the no. of neutron varies in an atom ,Why?

the no of protons and electrons are equal because an atom is electrically neutral and for that there is a need of equal no of protons (+ve charge) and electrons(-ve charge) but as neutron has no charge,it does not affects the stability of the atom as a whole.
