The number of subsets of a set containing n elements is  \sf {2}^{n}

1). For a set A ={2} , which contains one element The subsets are Φ, {2}

i.e., For a subset of one element there are 2 or  \sf {2}^{1} subsets .

2). For a set B = {x , y} which contains two elements The subsets are Φ, {x} , {y} , {x , y}.

i.e., For a set of two elements there are 4 or  \sf {2}^{2} sunsets
