the no. of trophic level in a food chain is limited because at every trophic level only 10% of energy or matter is transferred to next trophic level according to 10%law. therefore, after 3-4 trophic levels, so less amount of energy is left that after this no more energy can be transferred. hence no. of trophic level is limited.
hope this helps you!!

The number of trophic level in food chain is limited because at each trophic level a large amount of energy is being utilized for the maintenance of organism and lost as heat. The energy keep on decreasing at each trophic level and only 10% of the energy is being passed to the next level.
