Correct Question :

  • The numerator of a rational number is less than its denominator by 3. If the numerator becomes 3 times and the denominator is increased by 20, the new number becomes 1/8. Find the original number.

Answer :

  • Original fraction is 1/4.

To find :

  • Original number

Solution :

  • Let the denominator be x

Given that, the numerator of rational number is less than its denominator by 3 then,

  • Numerator = x - 3

Now , we have to write in fraction,

  • x - 3 / x

And also Given that, If the numerator becomes three time and the denominator is increased by 20 new number become 1/8 so,

  • 3(x - 3)/x + 20 = 1/8

》3(x - 3)/x + 20 = 1/8

》3x + 9/x + 20 = 1/8

Now , cross multiplying we get,

》(3x - 9) × 8 = x + 20

》24x - 72 = x + 20

》24x - x = 72 + 20

》23x = 92

》x = 92/23

》x = 4

Now, putting the value of x in the original fraction 1 we get,

》x - 3 / x

》4 - 3 / 4

》1/4

Hence , Original fraction is 1/4.
