Geographical Reasons for Less Rainfall:

Northeast Brazil receives less than 800 mm per year, due to the effects of the anticyclone prevailing in the south Atlantic. Some inland regions receive less than 400 mm/annum!

Rainfall amounts vary greatly from year to year. Droughts in the Nordeste are more likely. Unlike the Amazon, the Nordeste has long been developed, and during serious droughts thousands of people migrate towards the overpopulated cities of the south, or into the Amazon region. However, the coastal area from Recife southward receives more rain, year-round.

The northeastern part of the Brazilian Highlands receives very little rainfall due to the anti-cyclonic condition.

Explanation:

  • The northeastern part of Brazilian Highlands comes under the influence on offshore trade winds which promote dry conditions.
  • Thus, very little rainfall occurs due to these anti-cyclonic conditions that happens in the Atlantic ocean.
  • The precipitation in the atmosphere depends on the prevailing wind and existence of low pressure which is not found in this region.
