The great escarpment in the southern Eastern part of Brazil.

Is like a barrier to the south east trade winds giving rise to the Rain Shadow area in the North Eastern part of Highland.

It is also known as draught quadrilateral.

Hence the North Eastern part of the Brazilian Highlands receives very less rainfall
