The Northern Plains are the backbone of Indian economy because
1) the Ganga, the Brahmaputra and the Indus along with their tributaries provide continuous water to this region. That is why this region is rich in alluvial deposits and this makes it very fertile region.
2) The fertile alluvial soil together with better climate and ample water make agriculture a fruitful occupation in this region.
3) Since agriculture is the backbone of the country and the northern plains contribute a major portion of the yield, and hence, the northern plains are called 'Granaries of India' and very important for the growth of Indian economy.
