4 Faradays are required to produce one mole of Oxygen.

GIVEN

Amount of Oxygen to be produced from MgO. = 1 mole.

TO FIND

Number of Faraday needed to produce 1 mole of Oxygen from MgO.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows.

According to Faraday's Law of electrolysis-

The amount of substance that undergoes oxidation or reduction at the electrodes is directly proportional to amount of electricity passed.

So,

MgO ---------> Mg⁺² + O⁻²

2O²⁻ ----------> O₂ + 4e⁻

We can see that 4 electrons are produced to produce 1 mole of O₂

4e⁻ = 4F

Hence, 4 Faradays are required to produce one mole of Oxygen.
