The number of electrons in the outermost shell of an element is 5. What is its valency and why?

if the no. of electrons in outermost shell are five. For becoming stable, it can
! gain 3 electrons to comp. 8 electrons in outermost shell or
! loose 5 electrons.

Bt loosing 5 electrons will take so much energy as compared to gain 3 electrons. So, it will gain 3 electrons.
So valency of element = -3
