the number of electrons increases in the outer shell as we move from left to right in a period, why does the atomic size of an atom decrease?

this happens since the nuclear charge in the atom also increases with increase in atomic no.

increase in atomic no. means increase in no. of protrons therefore increase in nuclear charge which leads to electrons being closer and atom radii being smaller

hope this helps
