Answer:

let the number be x

1st Case, increased by 20%

X + X*20/100

6X/5

2nd case, decreased by 20%

6X/5 - 6X/5 * 20/100

6X/5 - 6X/25

24X/25

Net Change = X - 24X/25

= X/25

so net decrease percentage = ((X/25) / X) *100

= 4%

20

Let the number = 100

Increase in number = 20% of 100

= \frac{20}{100} \times 100 \: = \: 20

Increased number = 100 + 20 = 120

The resulting number decreased by 20%

decrease \: in \: number \: = \: \frac{20}{120} \: \times 120 = 24

New number = 120 - 24 = 96

Now net decrease = 100 - 96 = 4

net \: percent \: of \: decrease \: = \: \frac{net \: decrease}{original \: number} \: \times \: 100

   \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: = \frac{4}{100} \times 100 \: = 4

So your answer is 4%

hope it helps you...
