the number of girls in aschool is 274 less than the number of boys if the total number of the students in the school is 564 find the number of girls in the school

let no. of girls be x and that of boys be y 
then y - 274 = x , then y = x + 274 
and x + y = 564
then x + (x +274) = 564
2x = 564 - 274
then x = 290/2 = 145
