Given :   The number of students in each of the classes that Julia is taking and each of the classes that Mason is taking

To find : Which statements are true

Solution:

Julia’s classes: 25, 23, 28, 32, 27

Arranging in order

23  25   27  28   32

Q1 = 25   Q2= 27 Q3 = 28

Median Q2= 27

IQR =  Q3 - Q1 = 28 - 25 = 3

Mean = (23 + 25 + 27 + 28 + 32)/5  = 27

Mean = Median = 27

Range = 32 - 23 = 9

MAD mean absolute deviation  =  (4 + 2 + 0 + 1  + 5)/5 = 12/5 = 2.4

Mason’s classes: 20, 26, 24, 31, 29

Arranging in order

20   24   26   29  31

Q1 = 24   Q2= 26  Q3 = 29

Median Q2= 26

IQR =  Q3 - Q1 = 29 - 24 = 5

Mean = (20 + 24 + 26 + 29 + 31)/5  = 26

Mean = Median = 26

Range = 29 - 20 = 9

MAD mean absolute deviation  =  (6 + 2 + 0 + 3  + 5)/5 = 16/5 = 3.2

A) The mean is greater for Mason's classes than for Julia's classes - FALSE

B. For both sets of data, the median is equal to the mean. - TRUE

C The mean absolute deviation (MAD) is greater for Julia's classes than for Mason's classes - FALSE

D. The interquartile range (IQR) is greater for Mason's classes than for Julia's classes  - TRUE

E. The numbers of students in Julia's classes are less spread out than those in Mason's classes. - FALSE   ( Range is Same)
