Given : The number of students who take both the subjects Mathematics and Chemistry is 70

This represents 10% of the enrollment in Mathematics and 14% of the enrollment in Chemistry.

To Find :  The number of students take at least one of these two subjects, is

Solution:

Enrolment in Mathematics = M

10% of M = (10/100)M = 0.1M

0.1M = 70

=>  M = 700

Enrolment in Chemistry = C

14% of C = (14/100)C = 7C/50

7C/50 = 70

=>  C =500

M = 700

C = 500

M ∩ C = 70

number of students take at least one of these two subjects,

= M + C - M ∩ C

= 700 + 500 -  70

= 1130

1130  students take at least one of these two subjects
