Subject: Increasing Pollution at Hill Stations

Sir:

I am writing to you to express my deep concern and anguish over the very critical issue of increasing pollution at almost all the hill stations. I witnessed it with my own eyes and was horror struck at the deteriorating conditions of hill stations. During the summer vacation I had an opportunity to visit Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh. I had thought the freshness, greenery, purity and beauty of the place would refresh my body, mind and soul; but on reaching McLeod Ganj I was in for a shocking disillusionment.

Undoubtedly, the verdant mountains, fresh cool breeze and the clear azure sky were quite uplifting; but as I reached McLeod Ganj, I was exceedingly disappointed. The parking area was stinking like hell! The stink of urine and human excreta were all pervasive. Heaps of garbage lay on either side of the road.

The sorry state of the hill station was noticeable indicator of the apathy of the civic administration. There were no provisions of waste management. The Government seemed to be utterly incapable of handling the tourists and providing them the basic amenities and facilities. I hardly spent two hours there and rushed back to a place far from the madding crowd and stinking squalor.

Through the columns of your esteemed daily I appeal to the state and the central Governments to look into the matter and take prompt actions to keep our beautiful hill stations pollution free.

Thanking you,

Yours truly,

Gibran

Subject: Plight of Hilly tourist destinations.

Dear Sir

I am a resident of Manali who is grieved at the loss of its real spirit over the last three decades. What stood as one of the most scenic places at one time, has become a clutter of unevenly planned concrete structures coming up at every nook and corner in the form of hotels and guest houses. The garbage emitted by all the hotels is far beyond a manageable task. As a result, the problem of sanitation and cleanliness has become a concern for the people.

The construction of roads to bear the inflow of tourists round the year has deprived the place of its natural beauty. The increased number of cars has added to the emission of fumes which not only pollutes the air but has led to a drastic change in the climate of the once beautiful town.

The upkeep of the beauty of a hill station is a must if we continuously need to benefit from the tourism flourishing there. Making some policies in this regard and implementing them will certainly help minimize the reckless exploitation and commercialization. I hope authorities concerned realize the need of the hour and help retain the enchanting beauty of this valley of Gods.

Thank you

Yours truly
