on an average only 10 percent of food available to a tropic level is transferred to next tropic leve.since amount of available energy becomes as we move to higher tropic levels so very little usable energy remains afyer four tropic levels. that's why food chain has 3 to 4 tropic levels.

In an ecosystem, the number of trophic levels is limited as they cannot be more than 3 to 4 trophic levels.

This is because the "amount of energy flow" decreases with the successive trophic level. With each level transfer, only 10% of the energy is transferred from "one trophic level" to the "next trophic level" and hence the levels in the food chain must be limited.

Then, the trophic level of an organism is the number of steps it is from the start of the chain.
