Valency of an ion is nothing but the charge present on it.
Valency:
When an atom loses an electron or electrons in its outermost shell or the valance shell then it acquires positive charge, thereby the atom gets stabilized by attaining the noble gas configuration.
In the same way, if an atom gains an electron or electrons then it acquires a negative charge thereby it gets stabilized.
The number of unit of charges may be negative or positive on any ion depends on its valance electrons and it is called as its valency.
