let the number be x

According to statement

if x is subtracted from -3/4 i.e.,

 -  \frac{3}{4}  - x =  -  \frac{5}{8}

  - \frac{3}{4}  +  \frac{5}{8}  = x

 \frac{ - 3(2) +  5 }{8}  =  \frac{ - 6 + 5}{8}  =  -  \frac{1}{8}

hence The required number i.e, x =-1/8
