Given that:

  • The number which when subtracted from each of the terms of the ratio 19 : 31 reducing it to 1 : 4.

To Find:

  • What is the number?

Let us assume:

  • The certain number be x.

Finding the number:

According to the question.

⟶ (19 - x) : (31 - x) = 1 : 4

⟶ (19 - x) / (31 - x) = 1 / 4

Cross multiplication.

⟶ 4(19 - x) = 1(31 - x)

⟶ 76 - 4x = 31 - x

⟶ 4x - x = 76 - 31

⟶ 3x = 45

⟶ x = 45/3

⟶ x = 15

Hence,

  • The number is 15.

Given :-

when subtracted from each of the terms of the ratio 19 : 31 reducing it to 1 : 4 is

To Find :-

Number to be subtracted

Solution :-

Let the number to be subtracted be y

19 - y/31 - y = 1/4

4(19 - y) = 31 - y

76 - 4y = 31 - y

31 - 76 = y - 4y

-45 = -3y

-45/-3 = y

45/3 = y

15 = y
