The number x is 2 more than the number y. If the number of squares of x and y is 34; find the product of x and y.

Answer:

x+2=y

x^2+y^2=34

x^2+(x+2)^2=34

x^2+x^2+4+4x=34

2x^2+4x-30=0

x^2+2x-15=0

x^2+5x-3x-15=0

x(x+5)-3(x+5)=0

(x-3)(x+5)=0

x=3,-5

if x=3

then y=5

if x= -5

then y= -3

Therefore product of x and y is 15.
