there are few trends which can be used to determine whether the number given is a perfect square or not
some of them are :-
(I) the number ending with 2,3,7,8 can never be a perfect square.
(ii) the number ending with odd number of zeroes can never be a perfect square.
Now, 257 ends with 7.It follows that it is not a perfect square.
and,5050 ends with only one zero.So, it is not a perfect square.
