now equation woul be

$\frac{(x-4)+1}{x+1}=\frac{1}{2}$

on cross multiplying
$2(x-4+1)=x+1$
$2x-8+2=x+1$
$2x-x=8-2+1$
$x=7$

since numerator was x-4
so $7-4=3$
