Heya !!!
Let denominator of fraction be X
Then numerator of fraction = ( X -1)
Fraction = Numerator/Denominator = (X-1)/X
Denominator is increased by 3 New denominator = ( X + 3)
And,
Numerator is decreased by 2 new numerator = ( X -1 - 2) = X -3
Fraction = Numerator/Denominator = ( X -3)/( X +3)
According to question,
( X -3)/ ( X +3) = 1/4
4 ( X -3) = X + 3
4X - 12 = X + 3
4X - X = 3 + 12
3X = 15
X = 15/3
X = 5
Denominator of fraction = X = 5
And,
Numerator of fraction = ( X -1) = 5-1 = 4
Fraction = Numerator/Denominator = 4/5

let numerator=x
denominator=y
fraction=x/y
numerator is 1 less than denominator
x=y+1
x-y=1..........(eq1)
when denominator is increased by 3 and numerator by 2 the fraction is 1/4
x+2/y+3=1/4
cross multiply
4(x+2)=y+3
4x+8=y+3
4x-y=-5................(eq2)
by elimination method
Let's solve your system of equations by elimination.x−y=1;4x−y=−5Steps:Multiply the second equation by -1, then add the equations together.(x−y=1)−1(4x−y=−5)Becomes:x−y=1−4x+y=5Add these equations to eliminate y:−3x=6Then solve−3x=6for x:−3x−3=6−3(Divide both sides by -3)x=−2Now that we've found x let's plug it back in to solve for y.Write down an original equation:x−y=1Substitute−2forxinx−y=1:−2−y=1−y−2=1(Simplify both sides of the equation)−y−2+2=1+2(Add 2 to both sides)−y=3−y−1=3−1(Divide both sides by -1)y=−3Answer:x=−2 and y=−3
