from the question,

x=y-2...............(i)

(x-2)/(y+1) = 1/2

2x-4=y+1................(ii)

Substituting the value of x from eq (i) in eq(ii),

2(y-2)-4=y+1

2y-4-4=y+1

2y-8=y+1

2y-y=1+8

y=9

putting value of y in eq i

x=y-2

x=9-2

x=7
