Question:

The numerator of a fraction is 3 less than its denominator. If we add 1 to both numerator and denominator it becomes equal to 1/2. Find the fraction.

Answer:

2/3

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the fraction be m/n

⇒ Numerator = m

⇒ Denominator = n

Given,

m = n - 3 ------①

(m + 1) / (n + 1) = 1/2 ------②

Putting equation in equation ② →

  (n - 3 + 1) / (n + 1) = 1/2

∴ (n - 2) / (n + 1) = 1/2

∴ 2(n - 2) = 1(n + 1)

∴ 2n - 4 = n + 1

∴ 2n - n = 1 + 4

n = 5 -----③

Put equation in equation

   m = n - 3

m = 5 - 3

m = 2

As our fraction was m/n, the fraction = 2/3

Cheers :)
