Answer:

The fraction is 3/7.

Solution:

Let the Denominator be x

∴ Numerator = x – 4

When 1 is added to both its numerator and denominator:

Given,

\begin{array} { c } { \frac { x - 4 + 1 } { x + 1 } = \frac { 1 } { 2 } } \\\\ { \frac { x - 3 } { x + 1 } = \frac { 1 } { 2 } } \\\\ { 2 ( x - 3 ) = 1 ( x + 1 ) } \\\\ { 2 x - 6 = x + 1 } \\\\ { 2 x - x = 1 + 6 } \\\\ { x = 7 } \end{array}

∴ The fraction

= \frac { x - 4 } { x } = \frac { 7 - 4 } { 7 } = \frac { 3 } { 7 }

Thus the fraction is 3/7.
