Let the denominator of the required fraction be

x .

According to question ,

numerator of the required fraction =x - 4.

And if 1 is added to both its numerator and

denominator is became 1/2

x - 4 + 1/ x + 1 = 1/2

= x - 3 / x + 1 = 1 /2

= ( x - 3 ) × 2 =( x + 1 ) × 1 ( by cross multiplication )

= X × 2 - 3 × 2= X + 1 ( Distributive property states that )

= a( b + c ) = ab + ac )

= 2x + 6 = x + 1

= 2x - x = 6 + 1 ( by moving like terms on same side of equation )

= x = 7

Thus the required fraction = x - 4 / x = 7 - 4 / 7 = 3 / 7
