The numerator of a fraction is 5 less than its denominator. If 1 is added to the numerator and the denominator the new fraction is 2/3 find the fraction

 \frac{x - 5 + 1}{x + 1}  =  \frac{2}{3}

 \frac{x - 4}{x + 1}  =  \frac{2}{3}

2x + 2 = 3x - 12

3x - 2x = 12 + 2

x = 14

therefore \: the \: fraction \: is

 \frac{x - 5 + 1}{x + 1}

 \frac{14 - 5 + 1}{14 + 1}

 \frac{10}{15}  =  \frac{2}{3}

therefore the fraction is 2/3
