Answer:

numerator = 5

Step-by-step explanation:

let numerator be x, then denominator = x + 4   [ given, numerator is 4 less the                          denominator]

when numerator increased by 3, it becomes x + 3

when denominator decreased by 5 , it becomes (x + 5 - 4) = x - 1

number   = 2  (numerator / denominator = 2)

(x + 3) / (x - 1)  = 2

(x + 3)             = 2(x - 1)

x + 3             = 2x - 2

x - 2x            = -2 - 3

-x                  = -5     [negative sign cancels off]

x                   = 5

ie, numerator = 5, denominator = 5 + 4 = 9

fraction is 5/9
