ANSWER:

  • Original fraction = 3/7

GIVEN:

  • Numerator of fraction is 4 less than the denominator.
  • If numerator decreased by 2 and denominator increased by 1 than denominator is eight times the numerator.

TO FIND:

  • Original fraction.

SOLUTION:

Let the denominator of the fraction be 'x'

Then :

Case 1

According to Question :

Numerator = (x-4)

Original fraction = (x-4)/x. ....(i)

Case 2

=> 8(x-4-2) = x+1

=> 8(x-6) = x+1

=> 8x-48 = x+1

=> 8x-x = 48+1

=> 7x = 49

=> x = 49/7

=> x= 7

Putting x= 7 in eq(i) to get the original fraction.

=> Original fraction = (7-4)/7

=> Original fraction = 3/7
