Appropriate Question :

  • The numerator of the fraction is 3 less than the denominator. If 1 is added to both its numerator and denominator it becomes 1/2. Find the fraction.

Given :

  • The numerator of the fraction is 3 less than the denominator. If 1 is added to both its numerator and denominator it becomes 1/2.

To Find :

  • Required Fraction = ?

Solution :

Let Numerator be x - 3 and Denominator be x.

Therefore, required fraction = Numerator ÷ Denomintaor.

According to Question now :

→ (x - 3 + 1)/(x + 1) = 1/2

→ x - 2/x + 1 = 1/2

Cross multiplying both the sides we get :

→ 2(x - 2) = 1(x + 1)

→ 2x - 4 = x + 1

→ 2x - x = 1 + 4

x = 5

Hence, the denomintaor of required fraction is 5.

Finding the numerator of required fraction :

→ Numerator = x - 3

→ Numerator = 5 - 3

Numerator = 2

  • Hence,the numerator of required fraction is 2.

  • Hence,the required fraction is 2/5.

Verification :

→ x - 2/x + 1 = 1/2

→ 5 - 2/5 + 1 = 1/2

→ 3/6 = 1/2

1/2 = 1/2

LHS = RHS

Hence, Verified !
